Clamp Together Duct – Have You Offered It?

March 3, 2021

Until you use it, it’s a bit hard to comprehend — Clamp Together Duct is FAST, VERSATILE, AND EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED!

If you've never used the Clamp Together Duct System, here are some frequently asked questions to get you considering it as an option for your next dust collection application.

The Clamp Together Duct system — What exactly is it?

US Duct employee carrying a piece of clamp together ductClamp Together Duct is an easy-to-install industrial ductwork system. There are major three components of the system that make it so versatile:

  1. A five-foot, laser-welded pipe with rolled lip ends
  2. An 11-inch adjustable sleeve with rolled lip ends
  3. An over-center, stainless steel clamp

In addition, all additional components are available with rolled lip ends — elbows, branches, fittings, and specially fabricated parts.

The system is fully adjustable and quick fitting, thanks to the fact that a cut piece of pipe will slide into either the adjustable sleeve or the end of any fitting. The clamp secures the pipe to the fitting or sleeve but can be released for easy adjustment. With this design, there's no need for an installer to cut, bolt, weld, or rivet pipes together.

Can I get Clamp Together Duct in any size or material?

US Duct’s Clamp Together Duct system is available in a variety of:

  • Diameters: From 3” to 24”
  • Gauges: Light or heavy, up to 10
  • Materials: Stainless steel, galvanized steel, and carbon steel
  • Elbows: Any and all radius
  • Branches and fittings: Made to spec and desired configurations

Can Clamp Together be used in oil mist applications?

When a job is specified as oil mist, epoxy caulk is used in lieu of the standard sealants. HOWEVER, there are some additional aspects to be considered during installation as well. The duct must be hung straight, without any lateral stress caused by ‘pulling’ the duct into alignment with a pickup point. Pulling the duct opens up the clamp and will prevent the gasket in the clamp from sealing properly. Additionally, adjustable sleeve and pipe assemblies need to be installed with consideration to the drainage of the liquid. And lastly, the standard gasket is buna-n rubber and may be affected by certain phosphorus or Sulfur based effluents. Such may require a Goretex or Viton gaskets.

That sounds like a lot of work. Got something better?

US Duct also offers a suite of products that are meant to control and mitigate leaking oil mist. US Tubing is an airtight ducting system that combines the tightness of a flange and gasket seal with the convenience of a clamp together connection system. Like the Clamp Together Duct system, US Tubing is manufactured here in the United States and is fully adjustable and modular. But there are a couple of key differences between the two lines.

US Tubing ends are turned back at 90 degrees to create very precise Vanstone edges (vs. the Clamp Together Duct's rolled lip edges). This allows the US Tubing line to use a v-shaped gasket that fits around the entire end of the pipe (rather than on the face of the lip or in the gasket, like in Clamp Together Duct). This connection, along with a torque-tightened clamp, creates what we call the Ultimate Seal® of US Tubing.

Is Clamp Together Duct worth the price?

Absolutely! Let's compare spiral ductwork and Clamp Together Ductwork.

  • Straight pieces of spiral pipes are usually cheaper than straight pieces of Clamp Together Duct, but the spiral is normally of a thinner gauge so it isn't as versatile.
  • Longer lengths of spiral ducting can be installed with fewer connectors, but you'll end up paying more in freight to ship those longer pieces of pipe.
  • Fittings (elbows, branches, etc) are usually about the same when comparing in similar gauges.

So what's Clamp Together Duct's competitive advantage?

  • It's so easy to install that anyone of any skill level can do it.
  • It takes approximately 50-70% LESS time to install Clamp Together Duct, compared to a traditional sheet metal mechanic installing spiral or flanged duct.
  • There's less waste because don't need to do as much precise cutting and fitting to install Clamp Together Duct. (Trust us — even the most skilled and experienced installers make mistakes.)
  • Because of the simple clamp connectors, Clamp Together Duct can be disassembled, cleaned, reconfigured, and reinstalled. It's infinitely adjustable.

When you compare the total cost of your system — materials, labor, waste, ongoing maintenance, etc. — Clamp Together Duct is very competitive as an alternative to spiral duct.
